For over 20 years, UHC has been a vehicle for collective change focusing on several critical areas of community engagement and urban renewal.

Greenspaces, Parks, & Recreation

Protect and be stewards for University Height’s many parks including Minnesota Linear Park the series of triangle parks

  • Advocate for the perpetual preservation of the urban forest and wetlands within the NFTA property containing the old Erie-Lackawanna railway

  • Maintain and expand recreation trails including the Buffalo-Tonawanda Rails-to-Trails pathway

  • Coordinate tree plantings to both replace those previously removed and to further enhance our communities tree lines

  • Support beautification projects including community gardens, street planters, curbside gardens, flowerbeds within city parkland,

  • Organize recurring cleanups of shared greenspaces

Safety & Quality of Life

Hold landlords and homeowners accountable for the upkeep of their properties and address any issues of neglect or code violation:

  • Support tenants’ rights to a safe and well-maintained home and escalate their requests for intervention should landlords not promptly rectify problems

  • Ensure all residents cohabitate peacefully alongside their neighbors and address complaints about parties, excessive noise, or other disturbances which negatively affect residents’ quality of life

  • Work with local law enforcement and politicians to prevent crime

  • Partner with city officials on traffic calming to make neighborhood streets safer

Preservation & Renewal

Support the preservation and renewal of our district by helping owners keep up their properties and educating everyone about the history of the neighborhoods.

  • Aid in the application for the National Register Historical District tax credit

  • Help homeowners refurbish their houses

  • Preserve and share the history of community landmarks such Parkside Candy store and the Erie Lackawanna Railway

Community & Culture

Promote community events and support a diverse culture for residents of all backgrounds.

  • Build a strong brand for the University Heights area of Buffalo, including a coherent visual identity for all materials (publications, media, wayfinding, street signs and banners)

  • Empower individual block clubs to join together and gain greater collective bargaining power under the umbrella of the University Heights Collaborative

  • Improve student-resident relations through campaigns which help each side better understand the other and set reasonable expectations and boundaries

  • Organize and participate in events, parties, and social opportunities to unite the neighborhoods and residents

Business Partnership & Development

Promote desirable businesses for the neighborhoods and help them thrive.

  • Encourage new desirable business to lease otherwise poorly utilized storefronts (such as those on Main Street)

  • Support the formation and growth of local business associations and chamber of commerce

  • Help design and obtain signage for wayfinding to sites and businesses

  • Create and support events that will draw more visitors into the community
