For over 20 years, UHC has been a vehicle for collective change focusing on several critical areas of community engagement and urban renewal.
Greenspaces, Parks, & Recreation
Protect and be stewards for University Height’s many parks including Minnesota Linear Park the series of triangle parks
Advocate for the perpetual preservation of the urban forest and wetlands within the NFTA property containing the old Erie-Lackawanna railway
Maintain and expand recreation trails including the Buffalo-Tonawanda Rails-to-Trails pathway
Coordinate tree plantings to both replace those previously removed and to further enhance our communities tree lines
Support beautification projects including community gardens, street planters, curbside gardens, flowerbeds within city parkland,
Organize recurring cleanups of shared greenspaces
Safety & Quality of Life
Hold landlords and homeowners accountable for the upkeep of their properties and address any issues of neglect or code violation:
Support tenants’ rights to a safe and well-maintained home and escalate their requests for intervention should landlords not promptly rectify problems
Ensure all residents cohabitate peacefully alongside their neighbors and address complaints about parties, excessive noise, or other disturbances which negatively affect residents’ quality of life
Work with local law enforcement and politicians to prevent crime
Partner with city officials on traffic calming to make neighborhood streets safer
Preservation & Renewal
Support the preservation and renewal of our district by helping owners keep up their properties and educating everyone about the history of the neighborhoods.
Aid in the application for the National Register Historical District tax credit
Help homeowners refurbish their houses
Preserve and share the history of community landmarks such Parkside Candy store and the Erie Lackawanna Railway
Community & Culture
Promote community events and support a diverse culture for residents of all backgrounds.
Build a strong brand for the University Heights area of Buffalo, including a coherent visual identity for all materials (publications, media, wayfinding, street signs and banners)
Empower individual block clubs to join together and gain greater collective bargaining power under the umbrella of the University Heights Collaborative
Improve student-resident relations through campaigns which help each side better understand the other and set reasonable expectations and boundaries
Organize and participate in events, parties, and social opportunities to unite the neighborhoods and residents
Business Partnership & Development
Promote desirable businesses for the neighborhoods and help them thrive.
Encourage new desirable business to lease otherwise poorly utilized storefronts (such as those on Main Street)
Support the formation and growth of local business associations and chamber of commerce
Help design and obtain signage for wayfinding to sites and businesses
Create and support events that will draw more visitors into the community
